How to Apply - Intensive ESL for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Types of Applicant


Initial Applicants - Initial applicants are students who are currently outside the U.S. and seek to apply for an F1 student visa at the U.S. Embassy/Consulate for study in the U.S. at AAE.


Transfer Applicants - Transfer applicants are students who are currently attending another school in the U.S. and seek to transfer for study at AAE.


Change of Status Applicants - Change of Status applicants are students who are currently in the U.S. on another status (B1, B2, J1, etc.) and seek to change to F1 student status to remain in the U.S. for study at AAE.


STEP 1 – Complete Application Form

STEP 2 – Collect Supporting Documents 

  • Passport. Copy of the ID page(s) of your passport. It must be valid at least 6 months beyond your anticipated stay in the U.S.
  • Bank Statement. Student applicants must show proof of financial funds to cover tuition & fees and living expenses for their expected length of study in the U.S. The following are the source(s) of funding and documents needed to fulfill the financial requirement for the Form I-20 (you can select one or more):
  • Personal Funds – Submit your bank statement
  • Sponsor's Funds – Submit Certificate of Sponsorship and sponsor's bank statement

All statements must be current and are subject to authentication with the financial institution. The chart below are the minimum estimated tuition & fees and living expenses for the ESL 700 - Intensive ESL for Academic Purposes Program that you need to show to receive the Form I-20 and, if applicable, the student visa.

  • Transfer Students Only. If you are currently attending another school, provide additional documents:
  • Transfer Form
  • Copy of your recent I-94
  • Copy of your current Form I-20
  • Copy of your F1 visa (if available)

After Applying

After all the required documents and fee(s) are received, allow up to 3 business days for processing. We will contact you should additional information is needed. Upon acceptance, you will receive an Acceptance Packet which contains your Acceptance Letter and Form I-20. Your next step depends on your type of application:


  • Initial Applicants – File Form DS-160 to apply for the F-1 student visa at the U.S. Consulate/Embassy.
  • Transfer Applicants – Your current school will be notified your intent to transfer for the release of your SEVIS record.
  • Change of Status Applicants – File Form I-539 to apply to change to F-1 status with USCIS.


Before enrollment, please provide proof of high/secondary school completion or higher degree to show that you possess a high school degree or its equivalent. It does not need to be translated to English. Otherwise you must successfully take and pass the ability-to-benefit test prior to enrollment.
